L-Leucine Supplement Guide: Muscle Protein Synthesis & When It Is Redundant

Leucine Is an Important Signal

Leucine helps trigger muscle protein synthesis, which is why it gets so much attention in sports nutrition.

But Leucine Alone Does Not Supply All the Building Blocks

Muscle protein synthesis also requires the other essential amino acids. A complete protein source usually makes more sense than isolated leucine for most people.

Start With the Whole Meal

When protein intake is inadequate, improve the meal’s total protein and essential-amino-acid supply rather than assuming that adding leucine alone fixes it. The NIH exercise-supplement fact sheet discusses protein and BCAAs in the context of an adequate diet. A qualified dietitian can help assess individual needs.
