Blackstone Labs Dust X: DMHA Label and FDA Safety Concerns

Dust X’s DMHA content is the central issue in evaluating this Blackstone Labs pre-workout. FDA considers DMHA an unsafe food additive and considers supplements containing it adulterated. On that basis, we do not recommend Dust X as an ordinary high-stimulant training option.

What Blackstone’s published label shows

The current manufacturer page links to a facts panel identifying 25 servings and listing 350 mg caffeine anhydrous alongside 150 mg 2-aminoisoheptane per scoop. FDA includes 2-aminoisoheptane among DMHA’s names.

The panel also lists 4 g citrulline malate 2:1, 2.5 g beta-alanine, 1 g agmatine sulfate, 1 g L-tyrosine, DMAE, phenylethylamine, a Nelumbo extract standardized for higenamine, and huperzine A. The Nelumbo entry is an extract weight, so it should not be rewritten as a verified amount of pure higenamine.

Current listing versus older formula discussions

This concern does not depend on finding an old retailer listing. Blackstone’s own current page and facts image still identify DMHA. Dust X, Dust V2 and other similarly named Dust products should nevertheless be checked separately; a formula history does not prove what is in a particular tub.

The manufacturer’s page characterizes DMHA as legal. That conflicts with FDA’s published position: the agency says DMHA does not qualify as a dietary ingredient and supplements containing it are adulterated under U.S. federal food law. Continued online availability and customer reviews do not establish regulatory compliance or safety.

Why a caffeine comparison is insufficient

Comparing only the caffeine number overlooks the rest of the formula. A half-scoop trial, experience with energy drinks or avoiding afternoon use does not resolve FDA’s objection to DMHA. We therefore do not provide a Dust X dosing plan, stacking protocol or recommendation to work up to it.

If you already have a tub, retain its ingredient panel and lot details, and discuss any use or adverse effects with a healthcare professional. FDA’s supplement guidance advises stopping a supplement and seeking medical care or advice when an adverse reaction occurs; it also explains that supplements do not receive premarket FDA safety approval.

This is a label and regulatory review, not an independent chemical analysis. For an alternative, start with a fully identified formula that avoids ingredients FDA considers unsuitable for dietary supplements, then evaluate its complete label rather than chasing the strongest advertised effect.
